The opening of a new addition to Valley View High School in Jonesboro, Arkansas, has been delayed until January 2027, according to Jonesboro Right Now. The 22,149-square-foot building, whose construction was approved in January 2025, has faced setbacks due to the discovery of non-compliant materials in February.
Superintendent Roland Popejoy confirmed to Jonesboro Right Now that the materials involved masonry components, requiring removal and replacement. This rework caused a delay of two-and-a-half to three months. However, Popejoy stated that C.R. Crawford Construction absorbed the cost of the rework, ensuring no additional expense for taxpayers.
Despite the delay, the district plans to continue classes without interruption. Heavy equipment will be relocated during a school break, and creative scheduling will be used to maximize existing space. Popejoy emphasized that the new facility will improve student safety by providing more room for projects and reducing overlap.
Alongside the main addition, construction has begun on a 5,037-square-foot band facility. The band program has experienced significant growth, increasing from 75 students two years ago to 130 currently. Renovations are also underway within the existing band room to maximize space. The band facility is also expected to be completed around January 2027.
The main addition will include approximately 8,000 square feet of storm shelter space with specialized safety features. According to Popejoy, the district remains focused on providing students with facilities to support their learning and career goals, as reported by Jonesboro Right Now.
