Hundreds of Temple Independent School District teachers and staff gathered Monday, Aug. 10, for a convocation to launch the new academic year, kdhnews.com reported. The event at the Frank W. Mayborn Civic and Convention Center featured the Temple High School band and cheerleaders as employees entered the venue.
Principal Laron Slay told the crowd that the gathering serves as a celebration for local educators. District administrators and school board members presented awards recognizing staff for their work the previous year. Guest speaker Joe Sanfelippo, a former Wisconsin superintendent, urged attendees to stay motivated and true to what is best for students despite potential community criticism.
Superintendent Bobby Ott highlighted district achievements, stating he anticipates the Texas Education Agency will designate the district a “B” after it previously held a “C” rating. Ott noted a 97 percent graduation rate last year with all graduates deemed college and career ready. He emphasized that while buildings are important, they come to life when filled with people. This event followed an Aug. 5 ceremony honoring International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement scholars within the district.
