Dawn Ashley has retired from Muldown Elementary School following a 33-year career dedicated to instilling a passion for the arts in young students, the Whitefish Pilot reported. Ashley described her tenure at the school as a deeply satisfying professional journey.
According to the Whitefish Pilot, Ashley grew up in an artistic household and began playing piano in kindergarten. She initially attended Rocky Mountain College before transferring to what is now Montana State University Billings to focus exclusively on music. After teaching fifth grade in Opheim for one year, she returned to the Flathead Valley to teach elementary students, a demographic she felt was easily inspired.
The Whitefish Pilot noted that Ashley particularly valued working with children with disabilities and cited school programs as the highlight of her career. She averaged four shows annually during her peak years, ensuring every fourth-grade graduate performed a special part at least once. Beyond the classroom, Ashley helped establish the Alpine Theater Project and currently serves as music director for a Methodist church in Kalispell while playing for a Columbia Falls community choir.
Ashley taught nearly 4,500 children over three decades and emphasized the importance of students feeling part of a community, the Whitefish Pilot stated. In retirement, she plans to continue her church music involvement, spend time with family, and fish on the Bitterroot River.
