Limerick youth orchestra to perform at UK international festival

The Irish Chamber Orchestra’s ICO Youth ensemble will travel to Wells, Somerset, this July to perform alongside young musicians from around the world at the WOW Fest. Live95fm.ie reported that the Limerick-based group is scheduled to join approximately 300 performers from Ireland, the UK, the Netherlands, the United States and Brazil for the international festival taking place from July 10 to 13.

According to the report, ICO Youth will appear three times during the Wells Orchestral Weekend, with performances planned for the opening ceremony at Cedars Hall, a dedicated concert at St Cuthbert’s Church and an outdoor event at the Bishop’s Palace grounds. The festival, now in its fifth year, was created by The International Music Exchange and features venues including Wells Cathedral, where a large-scale production of Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana is scheduled.

Irish Chamber Orchestra CEO Gerry Keenan stated that music education remains central to the organization’s mission, noting that the ensemble provides high-level training and mentorship for talented young people in the mid-west region. Keenan expressed pride in the group’s recent accolades, which include three awards at the 2024 World Festival of Orchestras in Vienna and a first prize in the Orchestra Open Section at Feis Ceoil earlier this year. The Arts Council provided support for the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s continued international engagement through this event.
