LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — The Natural State Drum Academy (NSDA) is bringing young musicians together to learn the fundamentals of band and build confidence, leadership, and character through music, according to KATV.
Founders Cameron Robertson and instructor Chris Campbell say the academy’s goal is to help children improve their musical abilities. Robertson explained NSDA brings together students from Little Rock-area schools, including Dr. Mary G. Lacy Academy, J.A. Fair Academy, Parkview High School, and others, to strengthen the community.
Campbell expressed admiration for the students’ dedication, noting that hard work often surpasses natural talent. NSDA welcomes students of all skill levels, even those with no prior experience. One student reported the program provides a space to express emotions and helps manage anger.
Robertson emphasized the importance of creating a safe environment for children to be themselves. Looking ahead, Robertson hopes to expand the program with more students and performances at community events. He also aims to ensure that students pursue higher education, potentially at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), and continue enjoying the arts.
Participation in NSDA is currently free, and families can find more information and sign up via Instagram at “natural state dot drum academy.” The academy is open to children across Central Arkansas, KATV reported.
