Music education programs in Maine and across the country are still experiencing the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, WAGM reported. Six years after the initial disruptions, music educators say participation rates remain lower than before the pandemic.
Pamela Kinsey, a music educator, explained that music classes were disproportionately affected by pandemic restrictions, making it difficult to teach music as usual. She noted that educators had to find creative solutions, such as attempting outdoor lessons, which proved impractical in Northern Maine’s climate.
Amanda Karhuse, Assistant Executive Director of Advocacy & Public Policy for the National Association for Music Education (NAFME), said restrictions on music education continued even after schools reopened, particularly impacting choir ensembles due to concerns about super-spreader events. NAFME supported research on aerosol studies to determine safe ways for students to participate in music, including mask-wearing and instrument covers.
Kinsey attributed the decline in participation to a “herd mentality” among students who prioritized socializing with friends over music classes. She also noted that teachers experienced stress and burnout due to the challenges of virtual instruction and low student engagement.
Karhuse stated that specialists in education predicted it would take 10 years for music programs to fully recover from the pandemic’s impact. Kinsey explained that students who experienced a two-year hiatus from music instruction will be graduating in approximately six years, while younger students have not known any different, offering hope for the future of music programs.
