Killeen ISD high school bands begin summer camp preparations

Students from five Killeen ISD high schools have returned to campus for annual summer band camps, focusing on marching fundamentals and show preparation before the fall season begins. The district reported via killeenisd.org that hundreds of student musicians are arriving early and staying late to learn basic steps, timing, and drill formations that will eventually become complete halftime shows.

Drum majors from across the district emphasized the repetitive nature of early training. Ellison High School senior Jewell Reese noted that learning basics builds energy and commitment within the Screaming Eagle Band, which will present a comic book superhero-themed show titled “Boom, Crash, Pow.” At Killeen High School, senior drum major Austyn Jacob stated that camp excites students about the marching experience as the Roo Band prepares “Panachroma,” a performance featuring classic Americana songs.

Shoemaker High School senior Layla Llantade described the exhilaration of performing while noting that fun remains the primary goal for the Greywolf Band, whose show “In Pieces” draws on Japanese repair concepts. Harker Heights senior Nayeli Waggoner highlighted how mastering fundamentals leads to memorable competition experiences for the Red Brigade Band, which will perform “Midnight Renegade.” Chaparral High School senior Dominic Spafford characterized the Bobcat Band as a supportive family preparing “Code of Silence,” a mafia-themed production.

The district confirmed all bands will debut at a “Salute to Heroes” event on Aug. 21, followed by football season halftime shows starting late August and UIL competitions later in the fall.
