Kearsney College’s choir came back to South Africa this weekend after a debut performance at the World Choral Festival in Hong Kong, where pinnacle-schools.com reported it captured gold medals in both competition categories and earned more awards than any other choir at the festival.
The group won gold in the Youth Choirs and Show Choirs divisions, which qualified it for the Grand Prix Concert that gathered category winners from around the world, including children’s, university, adult, folklore, pop and jazz ensembles.
At the Grand Prix Concert the choir was honored with awards for Best Interpretation of the Music and Best Stage Presence, in addition to its two gold medals, and it also received the Jury’s Prize for overall musical excellence and artistic merit.
The results were determined by an international jury of 38 conductors representing 17 countries. More than 70 choirs from 19 nations competed, with Kearsney the sole African participant.
Scoring 90.8% in Show Choirs and 87.3% in Youth Choirs, the choir’s director highlighted the value of interacting with other groups, attending masterclasses with international specialists and experiencing Asian culture.
Of the 44 singers on tour, 26 were on their first international outing, 10 on their first overseas trip, and five had previously toured in 2024 when the choir won the overall championship at the Golden Voices of Barcelona.
