NSU University School is currently accepting applications for a Assistant Technical Theatre Coordinator to help with the operations of school events and Performing Arts initiatives. Position Summary
The Assistant Technical Theatre Coordinator is a 10-month staff position that supports the daily operation of the Performing Arts Department's production facilities, technical theatre program, and performance venues serving PK–12 students. Working under the direction of the Technical Theatre Coordinator, this position is responsible for supporting theatrical productions, concerts, assemblies, ceremonies, and special events while helping oversee venue operations, technical systems, student stage crews, and production logistics.
The Assistant Technical Theatre Coordinator plays an integral role in maintaining safe, organized, and professionally operated performance spaces that support both curricular and extracurricular arts programming. Through mentorship of student technicians and collaboration with faculty and staff, this position contributes to an educational environment where students develop technical skills, professionalism, collaboration, and creative problem-solving through live production experiences. While this position does not currently include regular classroom teaching responsibilities, instructional assignments may be assigned based on departmental needs.

Essential Responsibilities
Production & Event Support

Prepare, support, and execute theatrical productions, concerts, assemblies, ceremonies, and other school events.
Operate theatrical lighting, sound reinforcement, projection, staging, and related production systems during rehearsals, performances, and events.
Construct, install, and maintain scenic elements, props, and production equipment in support of departmental programming.
Support stage management, backstage operations, technical rehearsals, production meetings, load-ins, strikes, venue conversions, and event changeovers.
Monitor scenic construction and technical installations to ensure quality workmanship, functionality, and safe operation.

Venue Operations & Facility Management

Maintain the daily operation, organization, cleanliness, and readiness of theatres, backstage areas, scene shops, storage rooms, and production workspaces.
Maintain theatrical equipment, tools, technical systems, and production spaces in safe, organized, and operational condition.
Coordinate the movement, setup, storage, and restoration of production equipment in collaboration with faculty, operations staff, and student crews.
Monitor inventory of equipment, tools, expendable supplies, and production materials, recommending repairs, replacements, and purchases as needed.
Ensure production spaces, equipment storage, and work areas comply with school policies, fire code requirements, and applicable safety standards.

Student Leadership & Program Support

Supervise, mentor, and instruct student technical crews during rehearsals, performances, productions, and extracurricular activities.
Develop students' technical knowledge, craftsmanship, professionalism, leadership, and collaborative skills through hands-on production experiences.
Reinforce safe work practices and the proper use of theatre equipment, tools, and production systems.
Foster a professional, inclusive, and student-centered production environment that emphasizes responsibility, accountability, teamwork, creativity, and excellence.
Collaborate with faculty and production staff to provide meaningful experiential learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom.

Safety & Technical Systems

Promote and model safe work practices in all production, backstage, shop, and performance environments.
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and support the safe operation of lighting, sound, rigging, projection, staging, and other technical theatre systems.
Identify maintenance, safety, or operational concerns and communicate recommendations to the Technical Theatre Coordinator.
Assist in implementing departmental procedures that promote efficient operations, equipment stewardship, and continuous improvement.

Departmental Collaboration

Collaborate with faculty, staff, guest artists, operations personnel, vendors, and other departments to support successful productions and school events.
Provide technical support for school functions occurring during and outside the regular school day, including evenings and weekends as required.
Support the mission and goals of the Performing Arts Department through a collaborative, service-oriented approach.
Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Performing Arts Department.

Required

Bachelor's degree.
Experience in technical theatre, theatre production, live entertainment, or event production.
Demonstrated knowledge of theatrical lighting, sound, scenic construction, backstage operations, stagecraft, and production workflows.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and attention to detail.
Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and outside partners in a dynamic educational environment.

Preferred

Bachelor's degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Production, Theatre Design, or a related field.
Experience supervising student technical crews or working within an educational theatre program.
Experience operating theatrical lighting consoles, digital audio systems, projection systems, and theatrical rigging.
Familiarity with theatrical safety standards, venue operations, and industry best practices.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift, carry, push, and move equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders and work from personnel lifts following appropriate training.
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, reach, and work for extended periods during rehearsals, productions, and events.
Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments as production schedules require.
Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends in support of performances, productions, and special events.
