KSL News reported that more than 100 members of the Farmington High School marching band traveled to Washington, D.C., for Fourth of July festivities tied to the nation’s 250th anniversary, only to have the parade canceled the night before because of excessive heat.
Band director Brek Mangelson learned early on July 4 that a Capitol Hill community was willing to welcome the students. He quickly arranged for the group to perform at that smaller celebration.
Organizers said the neighborhood had never before featured a marching band in its parade, making the appearance a first for the community. Mangelson said the students played wonderful, and band member Wyatt Kennard described the experience as fun, noting the group was happy to still perform.
Parents watching along the route expressed pride and emotion, with one father saying he couldn’t stop smiling as his son marched.
After the event, several band members faced additional travel setbacks when flights home were canceled because of weather, but the unexpected parade experience remains a highlight the students say they will remember for years.
