During the trip, Norton, a graduate teaching assistant in instrumental music education, presented his research on U.S. music education, attended seminars and workshops, and observed how music functions within Ghanaian community life.
The experience, according to the report, is shaping his commitment to culturally responsive teaching, world‑music pedagogy and global collaboration, and he plans to incorporate these perspectives into his future work.
Following the initial visit, Norton has been invited back for a five‑week residency to conduct guest teaching, lead workshops and further develop partnerships between Auburn and the University of Cape Coast.
The report notes that Norton, a native of Tuscumbia, Alabama, earned his undergraduate degree at Alabama A&M University, an HBCU that influenced his identity as a musician and educator.
