The newly installed president of the Alabama Vocal Association is calling on members to actively join district committees to distribute workload and cultivate future leaders. According to the association’s President’s Message published in Ala Breve, this initiative aims to support advocacy, mentorship, and event preparation across every district. The report emphasizes that leadership requires a willingness to serve rather than holding a specific title.
The message also honors the legacy of Dr. Gary Packwood, a late mentor described by the association as a warrior for music education who championed courageous advocacy. In administrative updates, the association confirmed its 2026 Summer Board Meeting took place at Hartselle High School, where officials reviewed policies and approved repertoire. A new governing board for the 2026–2028 term was also introduced.
Looking ahead, the association announced its Fall Workshop will occur on September 4, 2026, at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Sources indicate clinician Stephanie Smeltzer will lead sessions addressing classroom practice and new sight-singing components for All-State Auditions. These auditions are scheduled to run from October 29 through November 6 at various sites. Furthermore, the 2027 All-State Festival is set to return to Samford University from March 11-13, following positive feedback from the previous year’s event.
